Why Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail Should Be Your Bachelor Party Destination
If Vegas isn’t the groom’s kind of scene, or if Miami’s beaches are too far for everyone to travel, consider Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail.
Trekking through the many, many bourbon distilleries in Kentucky is a great alternative to the traditional bachelor party. It’s a learning experience, sightseeing opportunity and a daytime activity all wrapped into one, leaving plenty of time for the group to party in the evening. Also, it’s a great excuse for some day drinking.
Kentucky’s location is also convenient if your group comes from all corners of the country; it’s smackdab in the middle of the South and the Midwest, and cities like Cincinnati, Atlanta, St. Louis and Chicago are a day’s drive away.
How To Travel The Bourbon Trail As A Bachelor Party
You can complete the entire trail in three days, so it’s perfect for a weekend trip. If you want to make time for the gift shops or another stop along the trail, though, you may want to consider which distilleries are more of a priority to visit.
Be sure to make reservations and confirm operating hours ahead of time so that your bachelor party isn’t a bust. Some distilleries only do first-come, first-served when it comes to spots on their tours, so get there early. Another good thing to know is that people under 21 years old can still take a tour, but they obviously can’t be part of the tastings.
Hire A Bourbon Trail Tour Company Specializing in Bachelor Parties
A lot of tour companies in central Kentucky offer private tours with your own driver and tour guide. This relieves the pressure off of planning an itinerary and staying on schedule, not to mention designating someone to be the driver. This can also be helpful for payments, as everyone in the bachelor party can pay his own portion direct to the tour company instead of reserving tickets at each distillery. Check out Mint Julep Tours and R&R Limousine to see what they have to offer.
Create Your Own Bourbon Trail Itinerary
If your bachelor party is more the DIY group, however, you can still create your own itinerary and travel schedule. The official Kentucky Bourbon Trail website is a great resource for all the distilleries and other attractions along the trail. Websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also great for getting suggestions and itineraries from other groups.
Must-Stop Places Along The Bourbon Trail
With all the distilleries registered on the Bourbon Trail, it’s tough to narrow down where exactly you should go. We’ve gathered a short list of favorite stops that your bachelor party has to visit.
- Woodford Reserve specializes in premium small batch Kentucky straight bourbon. In 2000, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The drive back to the distillery from the main highway winds through the best of Kentucky’s beautiful horse country. Woodford Reserve is also the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby and is used in a $1,000 mint julep sold to race patrons on Derby Day.
- Maker’s Mark is famously known for its red wax seal dripping down their bottles. At the end of your tour, you can dip your own bottle into the wax and take it home. If Maker’s Mark is your go-to choice of bourbon, join their Ambassador program which puts your name on a barrel of bourbon and gives you regular updates on the aging of your barrel. After seven years, you’ll receive a special invitation to return to Maker’s Mark and purchase a bottle from your batch. You’ll also get Maker’s Mark promotional items and exclusive invitation to Maker’s Mark events near you.
- Buffalo Trace, while not officially registered on the Bourbon Trail, is not to be missed. It’s also a designated National Historic Landmark and claims to be the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. All tours and tastings are complimentary, and there’s even a ghost tour offered a few nights a week.
